Assumptions
What this page models
- £6,000 current balance in funds, roughly one year of contributions
- £500 monthly contribution, so 12 fund trades are modelled
- No US-stock FX assumption
Monthly investing turns one-off dealing charges into a recurring cost. A platform that charges per fund deal collects that fee twelve times a year, so providers with free fund dealing keep the total down even when their platform percentage is not the lowest. That is why per-deal platforms sit lower here than their platform fee alone would suggest.
The model keeps the balance fixed at £6,000 for the year rather than compounding each contribution, so percentage platform fees will rise as the pot actually grows. The model includes platform, online dealing, and FX fees where relevant, and excludes fund ongoing charges, bid-offer spreads, stamp duty where applicable, and any market movement.
